Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4 Officially Confirmed

bungou stray dogs season 4

Bungou Sutorei Doggusu which translates to Literary Stray Dogs was one of the hottest anime titles released in 2016.

People sometimes call it Bungo Stray Dogs. The series was a strong contender for the best anime of the decade.

Season 4 has been eagerly anticipated by fans of the Bungou universe since the final episode promised a showdown within 6 months.

Well, at least in the anime it did. But in real life? It’s been 3 years now, and the spin-off isn’t cutting it, so what’s the news then?

Now that the fans are waiting for some news about the new season, let’s take a look at all the new updates about the upcoming season and what plots will be included.

Everything we know about Bungou Stray Dogs so far

It all started with one person’s idea to bring back forgotten authors and poets into the contemporary world for young audiences, but with a supernatural spin to it.

Bungou Sutorei Doggusu is the brainchild of Kafka Asagiri. Atsushi Nakajima gets booted out of his orphanage, a place he had come to call his home for 18 years of his life.

Now a homeless bum and hearing his tummy grumbling, Atsushi is at the lowest point in his life until he notices a body floating in the canal nearby.

He rushes to the site and pulls out the breathing body of Osamu Dazai.

Dazai is obsessed with suicide but he’s also a detective.

A detective for the Armed Detective Agency. An agency that is home to supernatural detectives is currently on the lookout for a were-tiger on the loose causing havoc in the city.

Dazai offers him a meal as his partner Doppo Kunikida is fuming watching him commit another suicide attempt.

What Atsushi is unaware of is that he too harnesses supernatural powers that allow him to turn into a were-tiger under the moonlight, the reason for his dismissal from the orphanage.

The two detectives then request his assistance on the case, which Atsushi reluctantly agrees to.

Bungou Stray Dogs now follows the adventures of these supernatural detectives finding exciting cases to solve and falling into some serious with the Port Mafia.

The story revels by Japanese authors like Ranpo Edogawa, Osamu Dazai, Atsushi Nakajima, Doppo Kunikida, Yukito Ayatsuji, and many more.

Asagiri has included international authors such as Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Agathe Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, and even Dan Brown.

There are 20 volumes of the original manga series, a total of 11 side-story manga series, 7 light novels, and 3 anime seasons with one spin-off series, one film, and one in the making.

That’s the Bungou universe you can explore to keep yourself updated until we hear of anything close to a new season.

Currently, Bungou Stray Dogs Wan! is the ongoing spin-off series to the main anime series where the Chibi Armed Detective Agency is solving supernatural cases.

A sort of new take on the original series showcasing the mundane but inexplicable side of our cute little detectives.

But is that what the audiences want?

Kafka says that he wanted the characters Atsushi and Dazai to contrast each other with some minor revisions made in the process of creating the series.

Asagiri wrote the main manga series, along with the light novels aimed at casual readers.

This was bundled along with the 13th limited-edition volume of the manga which was released in August.

As the manga was being released alongside the anime series, Bungou Stray Dogs: Dead Apple was released in 2018.

The same team and studio who created the anime series were roped in to create the movie.

The movie was distributed by Kadokawa. It won a lot of critical acclaim for the way the creators handled the characters and in terms of visuals.

After a gap of 3 years, Season 3 was released in April 2019 and concluded in June 2019.

Expected Plot of Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4

The popularity of Bungou Stray Dogs has only been scaling ever since its release, be it the manga or the anime series, so a new season is definitely on the cards.

Season 4 is now announced. But what will Season 4 cover?

Season 3 is completed at Volume 13 – Chapter 53 of the original manga series.

Although the source material is still ongoing and it seems that it is reaching its climax.

Many claims that this could also be the concluding season for the series.

Season 3 saw the introduction of a tonne of new characters like Fyodor Dostoyevsky and more.

What could be a factor for a delay apart from the pandemic is that the creators are waiting for the manga series to conclude to complete certain arcs.

Considering all the seasons has 12 episodes each, we can expect Season 4 to have 12 episodes of high-octane action, comedy, and maybe romance featuring our favourite detectives and also the fight Atsushi promised us.

The probability is not bleak but is certainly high.

Phew, that’s a huge number to read! By 2018, 6 million copies had been sold, and even became the ‘Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics of 2014’.

Production Cost for Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4

Creating an anime series or any animated movie takes hours of intensive labor and the creators working at the backend know how expensive the field is.

Given that Bungou Stray Dogs is a high production value anime series with a great art style, huge producers and artists creating amazing landscapes and frames.

The average cost of production for a 12 episodic could be around 250 Million Yen to 300 Million Yen.

According to IMDB the cumulative worldwide gross for Dead Apple was $2,16,349.

We could assume that given the cost of production, the creators have put into the series, they must have reached their expected earnings through various mediums.

The sales figures we discussed earlier definitely play a key role in the entire universe’s success.

The new season costs too could be the same but given the current economic conditions worldwide, we can only hope that the quality Studio Bones have been putting out doesn’t get compromised.

Popular Bungou Stray Dogs Characters

Now is the time to discuss the characters which make this series amazing.

Atsushi Nakajima

atsushi nakajima

Named after the famous 20th Century Author by the same name, Atsushi is the main protagonist of the series.

Before joining the supernatural Armed Detective Agency, Atsushi was an orphan who gets booted out of the orphanage he called home for the past 18 years of his life.

Atsushi learns that he can turn into a were-tiger under the moonlight possessing immense strength and regenerative capabilities.

Atsushi may come across as timid at first but he has a pure heart and fights for what he cares for the most, the people he loves.

Osamu Dazai

osamu dazai

Another famous fictional writer from Japan, Osamu is a member of the Armed Detective Agency.

Osamu is a suicidal maniac and seems to want to commit suicide in many different ways.

That’s how he gets introduced to Atsushi. Osamu’s ultimate dream is to die beside a beautiful woman!

He takes Atsushi under his wing to help him find the notorious weretiger and eventually helps him become a key member of the agency.

Osamu is cunning, skilled, and intelligent. He’s pretty powerful too, he can neutralize any supernatural power simply by touching the individual.

Doppo Kunikida

doppo kunikida

Dazai’s assistant. Doppo can bring quite literally any object to life by simply writing it in his notebook.

He is a meticulous planner and is the more organized of the two.

Doppo is named after the 19th Century Japanese author by the same name.

There are literally (no pun intended) several other characters whom we can potentially see in the new season, From the Armed Detective Agency, we could expect to see, Ranpo Edogawa, Kenji Miyazawa, Yukichi Fukuzawa, and Katai Tayama are just a few.

Not forgetting the Port Mafia members, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Chuuya Nakahara, Ryuurou Hirotsu, Ougai Mori, and more.

The Guild Members are named after famous Western authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, H. P. Lovecraft, Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Mizuki Tsujimura, and well the list is endless.

Other Decisive Factors for Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4

The very fact that we’ve already discussed above is that Atsushi could be involved in a bloody battle in ‘6 months’ leaving the show on a cliffhanger.

The last season covered a few arcs, and flashbacks and introduced some new ones as well.

Plus, the manga series is reaching or potentially has reached its climax.

So, either the creators can now begin the scripting process or add to it by not deviating away from the source material that is.

A new season is expected to complete the universe.

Ending of the Bungou Stray Dogs Season 3

Of course, Atsushi, Dazai, and Kunikida have come far from just finding the were-tiger.

Towards the end of the main series, a war ensues between the Port Mafia and the agency.

A war in which Kunikida refuses to participate in after following Fukuzawa’s orders.

Edogawa and Chuuya get trapped in a murder novel by Poe and Fukuzawa and Mori engage in a one-on-one fight.

To make things worse, Akutagawa is inflicted with the same virus that Fukuzawa and Mori have been infected with.

Atsushi and Akutagawa chase after Pushkin but get obstructed by Goncharov.

He then manages to manipulate the earth and create Golems to distract them from their path.

Dazai manages to get a helping hand from Fitzgerald to counterattack Fyodor’s moves to arrest him.

As the battle reaches its culmination, Atsushi and Akutagawa promise to fight it out with each other in 6 months.

The controversy surrounding Bungou Stray Dogs Season 4

The series doesn’t have too many controversies surrounding it, but not everything leads to perfection always.

Many fans did not end up like the previous season of the series.

Starting with the pacing of Season 3, many found it to be short story arcs and were hoping for more than 12 episodes.

It felt extremely fragmented and the mini-arcs didn’t seem to go together.

Some even went on to state the fact that Studio Bones shouldn’t be creating any sequels since they can’t seem to work out the pacing and right storytelling to keep the fans gripped.

The ones who have read the manga seemed to have grimaced over the whole Chuuya flashbacks.

In one particular scene, Dazai even said, ‘stray dog’ and not ‘stray dogs’ indicating Oda’s death.

And even some claimed that the final fight scene was a little forgettable since some of the characters weren’t even introduced well.

But the majority felt that the entire season was essentially carried on Fyodor’s character more than anyone else’s.

All of this being said, the need for a new season hasn’t dulled down really.
