Perry Mason Season 3: Everything We Know So Far

Perry Mason Season 2

Produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey of Team Downey, Perry Mason is a courtroom drama that chronicles the story of defence lawyer Perry Mason. Set in Los Angeles in the 1930s, the program introduces us to the titular character who begins his professional journey as a low-key private investigator but soon becomes obsessed with unearthing the truth behind crimes as a lawyer.

While the focus of the original TV series of the same title was on Mason and his heroics as a lawyer, the HBO series brings to light the life of the character as a private investigator in Los Angeles.

Needless to say, it does a good job of keeping the viewers interested for a couple of seasons. That being said, it is imperative to mention that this iconic defence lawyer from the novels by Erle Stanley Gardner has also made his presence felt in dozens of reboots across TV, film, and radio over time.

It is not surprising then that it managed to strike a chord with the audience when it hit the small screens in 2020. Perry Mason’s success can be gauged from the fact that its initial season earned 13 Emmy Award nominations.

Indeed, its viewers truly relished being transported back in time to the 1930s. So, the question now is: Will the series return for a third season in the near future?

Let’s find out together.

Official Announcement of Perry Mason Season 3

If you’re a fan of detective and lawyer Perry Mason from his books or the original series, you will be a tad disappointed to learn that HBO has opted not to renew the newer version of the detective drama for another season.

While the network is truly grateful to the stellar cast for bringing the brilliant project to life, it is also of the opinion that the second season was the right time for it to culminate for good.

Indeed, the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the rest of the cast kept the viewers glued to their screens for a good couple of seasons. Now, even though Perry Mason has been called off, HBO seems to be more than willing to continue working with the talented creatives at Team Downey on future projects.

The series debuted in June 2020 and its finale episode was telecast on April 24, 2023. Downey Jr. once mentioned that he and the team have discussed the possibilities of a third season.

However, the stakeholders at HBO believe that the series has done its job well and that it’s the right time for it to bid farewell to its audience. Needless to say, they believe that certain elements have to be taken into consideration while discussing whether or not a show will continue.

And, as you’d have guessed by now, those elements point towards Perry Mason’s completion.

Previous Seasons and Episodes of Perry Mason

Based on the characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, the show introduces us to the titular Perry Mason in the first season, who, in booming 1932 Los Angeles, takes on the case of a lifetime.

Soon after seeing his heroics in the debut season, we catch him and Della pursuing civil cases in the second edition of the series, which is set in the worst year of the Depression.

In it, we witness an open-and-closed case overtaking the city of Los Angeles. Perry, in his relentless pursuit of justice, steadily realizes that not everything is always as it seems.

Therefore, a twist of events ends up landing the man in person; therefore, ending the season on a major cliffhanger. This is probably why fans of the period drama series are hoping for its renewal.

Even though there have been talks of a third season, the decision rests in the hands of the HBO heads, and they seem to have made up their minds. Either way, if you’ve seen the show or are planning to stream it now, watch out for the following episodes: Chapter 7, Chapter 15, Chapter 6, Chapter 8, and Chapter 14.

There are a total of sixteen episodes in both seasons of the program and each of them is 56–64 minutes long.

Google Trends Data Analysis of Perry Mason Season 3

Perry Mason seems to have bowed out of HBO after having tried his last case. The actors and crew members who worked on the project ensured that they managed to build an incredible world that would keep the viewers guessing and asking for more.

However, there is also no denying that this intriguing project, like any other, would also have to end sooner or later. Writers and co-showrunners Jack Amiel and Michael Begler managed to hit the ball out of the park with this project; especially in its award-winning freshman year.

Although the producers have once gone on record to mention that they hoped for the series to renew in the future, the fact of the matter is that it remains cancelled with little to no scope of a revival.

Needless to say, the cancellation has led to some changes in the search trends related to the third season of the series on Google. While there was a sharp rise in the number of people searching for a new season following the debut of the second, the searches saw a rather drastic decline after the final episode of the same aired.

Suffice it to say that the decline was expected since people tend to lose interest in a cancelled series over time.

Social Media Engagement for Perry Mason Season 3

Perry Mason has been cancelled after two seasons and its fans have a ton of things to say about HBO’s decision. A lot of people subscribe to the network for its quality programming and Perry Mason has been the pinnacle of that programming for the past couple of years.

It managed to impress its target audience through its production design, acting, directing, and writing. Needless to say, quite a few people were left disappointed on learning that HBO has called off the series instead of investing marketing dollars behind it to reach more prospective viewers.

Matter of fact, this decision has left many people wondering if they should even renew their HBO subscription. On various other social media platforms, the verdict is that cancelling Perry Mason was a terrible decision since it was a great example of top-shelf television.

Indeed, some people have even confessed that it was fun for them to see all of the historical aspects of Los Angeles, which they are going to evidently miss. However, they also seem to believe that maybe HBO is hurting financially; therefore, the decision to not renew wonderful programs such as these.

Add to that the fact that the fans are hoping against hope that Perry Mason would be picked up by some other network for a possible revival. That being said, you can find quite a few posts on X (formerly Twitter) prompting other people to watch the second instalment of Perry Mason so that there is even the slightest chance of getting a third season.

Expected Plot of Perry Mason Season 3

Those who’ve seen the first two seasons of Perry Mason know that there was a strong possibility for a third edition as well, given that the second one ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, with the titular character ending up in prison.

If a third instalment were ever to be released, they could chronicle the journey of Perry in prison. Indeed, the makers could have tried to keep the interest factor of their core audience intact by showcasing Perry fighting a ton of battle inside the prison; this time both physical and mental.

A subplot, where he can be seen fighting his case, could also have been added. Needless to say, the makers could have easily explored more stories with the pack of characters they had in hand.

Since the audience was thrilled to be transported back in time to 1930s Los Angeles each week, they would have certainly welcomed whatever the crew came up with in the third season.

We all are aware that Mason is a newfound lawyer, so his finding his legal legs could have taken a couple more seasons. The second season was deeper darker and more exciting than the first; primarily because we had only just begun scratching the surface of what these characters lived.

Therefore, the third season, if it ever goes into production, would have been ideal to dig a little deeper into these characters.
