Official Announcement on Designated Survivor Season 4
Designated Survivor was created by David Guggenheim for the ABC network in December 2015. The series premiered on the channel in September 2016 and received overwhelming praise. Eight days later, it was converted into a full season.
In May of the following year, Designated Survivor was renewed for season two, and it was telecast in September 2017. By this time, the showrunner was changed multiple times due to various reasons.
The series ratings were also declining. Hence, ABC Network cancelled the show in May 2018. The production company, Entertainment One, approached Netflix with a proposal for season three, and it was accepted in September 2018.
Netflix released season three in June 2019 and in the following month, announced that season three was the last season, but all three seasons will continue to be available on Netflix.
The season for its cancellation at Netflix was the problem with the actors’ contracts, they were signed on for a one-year deal only. Netflix announced that season 3 was a satisfactory finale; hence, it would not renew the show for season 4.

Previous Seasons and Episodes of Designated Survivor
The show is a political drama that was full of intrigue, mystery, dirty scheming, assassinations and all. When it premiered in September 2016, the series received high critical and audience reviews.
Initially, it was slated for a season with 13 episodes, but within eight days of its premiere, it received the contract for a full season of 21 episodes. It started out with Tom Kirkman, a US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, becoming the designated survivor after the entire cabinet was killed in an explosion at the Capitol building during the State of the Union address.
He becomes a novice president who has to handle the fallout of the explosion, its investigation, and the numerous issues that plagued the nation. The political intrigue wowed the audience and the critics with its bold handling of current issues.
It was renewed for season two, which came out in September 2017 and had 22 episodes. The series continued to tackle more current issues and ramped up the scheming and drama in the political corridors.
At this point, the audience felt that the show did not need to touch on certain burning issues of that period. They were not too happy with the series, and the ratings fell.
While it still had a dedicated fan base, the ratings dip led to its cancellation. Later, Netflix picked up the show for release in June 2019. It only had 10 episodes before it was cancelled again.
This time, however, the showrunner ended the series with a semblance of order and closure on at least a few questions.

Expected Plot of Upcoming Season
Netflix felt that the series Designated Survivor had a satisfactory ending with season 3, but we know that there were some unresolved issues and questions that had potential in season 4.
In this section let us discuss a few of those unresolved issues that have the potential to build a new season. While Tom Kirkman tried his best to tackle issues in a straightforward manner, he also had to resort to some dirty tactics.
The fallout of his actions is yet to be seen. He hid evidence on his opposition leader and had him indicted for a bioterrorism attack. This action alone could lead to his impeachment during his second term as president.
Apart from Kirkman, there were others who were involved in other scandals like the illegal hacking scandal that could lead to the arrest of Lorraine, the campaign manager. Aaron Shore, the ex-chief of Staff and Vice-President-elect, was having relationship issues with his partner Isabelle.
At the end of season three, she broke up with Shore, but we found out that she was pregnant with his child. This could be a potential plot line with the both of them trying to work out their relationship for the child.
These are just the pending issues in the story so far, but considering that President Kirkman was re-elected for his next term, we can see more scandals taking place.
