The Sinner is an anthology TV series that belongs to the genre of crime drama and police procedural shows. The series was initially based on the novel of the same name, written by Petra Hammesfahr, which became the basis for the first season.
The following three seasons followed the theme of ‘whydunnit’ set by the novel and investigated independent crimes in each season. The show starts with Police Detective Harry Ambrose as he investigates the case of a troubled woman, Cora Tannetti, who violently stabs a man.

USA Network developed the novel The Sinner, intending to make it into an eight-part miniseries. With the success of the series, they were encouraged and renewed it for three more seasons.
However, after season four was telecast, the corporate bosses made a decision to cancel the series and announced that season four was the final season. Many speculate that the business decision of USA Network to move away from scripted series to more reality-based shows is responsible for the cancellation of the show.
As the series is an anthology, the directors and the crew did not have to make many changes to the script and ended the series in a natural way. USA Network dropped the series, and Netflix immediately bought the series.
This gave hope to the fans that Netflix might revive it. The show creator, Derek Simonds commented that due to the nature of the series, it was not a big problem to end this series with Detective Ambrose and begin a new series with a younger or different detective.
The same theme and style can be used to create a new series if the fans are interested in it. On the matter of official announcements, USA Network has cancelled the show and closed the doors for its revival on its network.
Netflix has bought the series but has not made any announcement about the future of the series.
