Barbie Movies In Order [Chronological Watch Order]

In these movies, many themes were glorified, like natural predators in Mariposa or caring for the natural environment in Fairytopia: Mermaidia. By then, these movies had definitely evolved, with different characters and different storylines.

 

Exactly why it tugs at our heartstrings with a sense of nostalgia, it kicks off in an era reminiscent of the middle ages, echoing the classic vibes of Swan Lake, and then catapults us into a realm that’s futuristic, akin to Starlight.

The best part is that you can enjoy all these instalments, all thanks to the chronological order. And this chronological order starts with the 2005 release of Barbie: Fairytopia.

 

 

 

 

1. Barbie: Fairytopia (2005)

 

 

Will Lau and Walter P. Martishius’s directorial Barbie: Fairytopia lies 5th in the release order, however, it is the first in terms of watch order. The only reason behind it is carrying an original storyline, not at all depending upon the previous stories or the movies that were released in the Barbie film series.

 

Elina is the one in the role of Barbie who is known for being the fairy without any wings. Living in a magical world, her dwelling is a flower with her friend named Bibble.

 

After losing many wings from her body, she eventually lost all her flying abilities because of Laverna, an evil. This resulted in her taking a step towards saving her dwelling and her friend by reaching the Guardian Fairy named Azura.

 

 

 

2. Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia (2006)

 

 

The 7th entry in the Barbie film is Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia which carries the event of Fairytopia (2005), thus gaining 2nd position in the chronological order. The story continues with Elina and her battle against the evil Laverna.

 

Being rewarded for her bravery, she was, later on, forced into a fight with evil. When Laverna was trying to give poison for polluting the sea and finishing all aquatic life because of a magical immunity, he tried his best to deal with Elina and her companions.

Mariposa and the other girls are dealing with some internal conflict in the kingdom of Butterfield, which is protected by magical lights installed by Queen Marabella.

 

Mariposa jumps in between her friends Rayla and Rayna to carry the territory in her hand as Lord Gastrous and Prince Carlos fight for the chair and power of the Queen.

 

As a result, they try to solve the conspiracy by banding together with Queen Marabella.

 

 

 

4. Mariposa and the Fairy Princess (2013)

 

 

Barbie: Mariposa 2 continues the narrative of Mariposa and her approach to saving Kingdom Flutterfield. However, it is not only about Flutterfield but also about an enemy kingdom known as Shimmervale.

 

Mariposa, after becoming the Royal Ambassador of Butterfield, was always concerned with the peace of the nation, therefore she became interested in the opposing Kingdom.

 

The only way to acquire the trust of competing Kingdoms is to befriend its King’s daughter, Princess Catania. However, due to misunderstandings, Mariposa is expelled from the kingdom and forced to return to her homeland.

 

But the story does not finish there because she stumbled upon an evil Gwillion who was determined to destroy Shimmervale.

 

 

5. Barbie Fairytopia: Magic of the Rainbow (2007)

 

 

It is the final piece of the Fairytopia part in the Barbie film series, released on 11 March 2007. The story comes back to Elina and her apprentices and their opportunity to create the first rainbow of the season with the help of their particular magic.

 

To execute this opportunity, they all started performing it in their school however, Laverna comes back to seek revenge by stopping this annual function. Laverna threatens them to put the whole of Fairytopia in 10 consecutive years of winters.

 

Elina with her friends came with their different personalities and magic to deal with the evil and bring all the colors of the rainbow into their life.

 

 

6. Barbie of Swan Lake (2003)

 

 

In the words of Scott Hettrick from South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the movie has “all the elements of a good fairy tale that [are] delightfully translated here visually in this comforting, entertaining and engaging presentation.”Starting a new life of a new character or new Barbie, the film also goes with new themes and evils.

 

It started when Princess Odette was turned into a Swan by an evil named Rothbart. However, she was, later on, saved by The Fairy Queen but without gaining her previous existence permanently.

 

She will gain her human existence at night but soon will turn into a Swan in the morning.

 

 

7. Barbie & the Diamond Castle (2008)

 

 

Carrying out the theme of friendship, the story again deals with different Barbies in musical form. It is about Alexa and Liana, the two best friends, who share a commonality in terms of music.

8. Barbie as Rapunzel (2002)

 

 

Being second in release order, the story fits quite away because of its event. As one can guess from the title of Rapunzel, it is indeed based on the classical story of Rapunzel and her tower.

 

The story gains the track with Rapunzel being trapped in a big tower by a witch. Because of this, she was never aware of the happenings of the outside world.

 

Just to entertain herself and pass her day, she got a hold of painting and dreaming. However, things differ when Rapunzel got to know about a secret tunnel inside the tower that leads to a new Kingdom.

9. Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses (2006)

 

 

Based on some tale of the Brothers Grimm, the story commenced the life of King Randolph and his 12 daughters. Among them is Princess Genevieve, the most extrovert of all, who later becomes the main Barbie character.

 

To teach the manners and etiquette of lady life, King decided to get the help of his cousin named Duchess Rowena. But for Rowena, it is an opportunity to end the life of the king and take the kingdom under her hand.

 

Despite carrying the typical plotting theme inside Kingdom, the film stands out because of its four dance sequences present in different parts of the film.

 

 

10. Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper (2004)

 

 

Based on the 1881 novel called The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain, the film changed the structure into animation with the flavor of typical Barbie elements. It is about Princess Anneliese and Erika who could together start a journey of a forever friendship.

 

However, their friendship was kept on test by the evil plans of Preminger, the queen’s advisor. His plans of taking infinite power for himself lead Erika to manage things. Even though following the typical plotting of getting powers in hand, it stood well on the borderline between choosing one’s heart and one’s duty.

 

 

11. Barbie and the Three Musketeers (2009)

 

 

The 16th entry in the Barbie film is the 11th in chronological order. It is based upon the classical story of The Three Musketeers however, the situation differs as it takes the Barbie theme.

 

It is about the life of a brave girl named Corinne who always wanted to go on the same way as her father which is to protect the French royal family. It also deals with some gender discrimination.

 

It can be seen through the realization of Corinne about girls can never be musketeers. However, she with the other three characters shunned all these norms and prove themselves by protecting the royal family, especially Prince Louis who later forms an attraction towards Corinne.

 

 

12. Barbie as the Island Princess (2007)

 

 

It is the second musical film present on the list, apart from Barbie & The Diamond Castle. It stars Rosella as a young Barbie who was shipwrecked and ended up on an island.

 

She with all the inhabitants of the island, that is anthropomorphic animals, started living their life. A prince named Natonio comes into the story with Fraser, his right-hand man. They both arrived on this Island and met Rosella to explore the civilization present on the land.

 

The film remained one of the enchanting parts of the Barbie film series which gained much attention for its subject matter. It has a very lush original score in terms of animation that became an inscape in itself.

 

 

13. Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001)

 

 

Though Barbie in the Nutcracker is an inaugural film of the Barbie film series, however, it falls in the list of watch order. The story starts with the narration of Barbie to Kelly about a girl Clara.

 

The title gains its existence through a Christmas gift given by Aunt Elizabeth to Clara. On that particular day, the Nutcracker comes alive and protects Clara from the soldiers of evil called Mouse King.

 

This resulted in Clara and Nutcracker starting their journey in quest of the Sugarplum Princess. In between these, the two dancing numbers also became part of the story. After the defeat of the Mouse King, the Nutcracker changes into Prince Eric, meanwhile, Clara transforms into a princess.

 

 

14. Barbie in A Christmas Carol (2008)

 

 

Based on the story of Charles Dickens with the same name in 1844, the story gains the continuation of its predecessor where Barbie again narrates a story to her sister Kelly.

 

Instead of going with Clara this time, she decided to go with Eden. Eden was visited by 3 Christmas spirits where each representing a different time. The first one is the Christmas Past which represents the moment of childhood, followed by the Christmas Present representing the current day.

 

The last one is Christmas Future which shows the behavior of Eden in the future.

 

 

15. The Barbie Diaries (2006)

 

 

Eric Fogel’s directorial The Barbie Diaries is the 8th entry in the Barbie film series but falls in the category of watch order. Remarkable for its vocals and soundtrack, it also stood out for its character and enchanted animation.

 

Instead of going with any classical story, things travel in the present scenario of the school year. With the hope of having a great year without ordinary life situations, Barbie finds the courage to be like themselves through a diary where she writes about her hope and dreams.

 

The story is executed by 3 best friends, Kevin, Tia, and Courtney, and their competition against Raquelle, the most popular girl in the school, and Todd, her boyfriend.

 

 

16. Barbie: Spy Squad (2016)

 

 

Following a unique story, Barbie Spy Squad comes with a 32nd entry in the series. It is about ordinary friends and their friendship while working together to execute unexpected goals.

 

It deals with a Barbie named Teresa and Renee, the new character in the series. Both being talented gymnasts, they were hired as undercover agents. In the between of gymnast qualities, they added the flavour of teamwork while tracking down a thief, responsible for many robberies of jewellery.

To repair her heart from all these bad happenings, Barbie decided to visit her aunt, Millicent, however, her aunt is going through many other problems, dealing with a design firm.

Continuing the story with Barbie, Raquelle, and Ken, the fashion theme again came into the story however, it ended up with friendship. The film started when Barbie was getting ready for her latest film with her stylish friends, Taylor and Carrie.

 

The main plot arrives with the kidnapping of Ken by many fairies. To get Ken back from the world of Gloss Angeles, a secret fairy world, Barbie with her friends set out on this mission.

 

After facing many challenges and obstacles, they eventually discovered fairy magic and glorified the power of friendship.

 

 

19. Barbie: A Perfect Christmas (2011)

 

 

A Perfect Christmas is the second Christmas holiday film present in the Barbie film series. Instead of going with any old characters, it continues with three sisters named Chelsea, Stacie, and Skipper who made their film debut.

 

When these three sisters decided to go to New York and visit Aunt Millicent or Aunt Mille, many obstacles in their journey with complications arrived. Thus, the sisters ended up in the festive town of Tannenbaum.

 

The story soon takes a turn to the musical picture with snow and mountains in the setting. The thing that highlighted the film is the introduction of new characters as well as old ones.

 

It has not left the essence of magic while bringing a new setting.

 

 

20. Barbie & Her Sisters in A Pony Tale (2013)

 

 

Even though becoming the 26th entry in the Barbie film series, the story continues with the predecessor watch order. It can be seen through the last 3 characters that are introduced in A Perfect Christmas: Chelsea, Stacie, and Skipper.

 

Instead of going to New York where they have faced many obstacles, the sisters now started their journey to Switzerland. While deciding to do horse riding, the sisters met with a kind horse.

 

Stacie wants to prove herself as an excellent rider, meanwhile, Chelsea wants to go with big horses. On the other hand, Skipper is not at all excited to be out again for a new city.

 

It gains a new angle with the arrival of a male horse rider for whom Skipper has formed a soft corner in her heart.

 

 

21. Barbie & Her Sisters in The Great Puppy Adventure (2015)

 

 

Again going with three sisters named Chelsea, Stacie, and Skipper, the story follows their adventure but instead of going to different cities, they come back to their hometown, Willows. However, their adventures do not just end here as their hometown has more mysteries than one can expect.

 

It comes from the attic of their grandmother where the sisters have found a treasure map. After finding the direction of the map heading towards a local town, all three of them decided to discover the hidden treasure.

 

This hidden treasure is related to a hidden chest of jewels however, the real treasure lies in their friendship, again making it typical with themes.

 

 

22. Barbie & Her Sisters in A Puppy Chase (2016)

 

 

This is the 4th feature film of Barbie and her sisters who again went on many adventures. It became more like a picaresque film rather than any magical one. It can be seen through Barbie and their sisters traveling again but in a different place, a tropical Paradise of Hawaii.

 

Instead of going behind any treasure or dealing with any misadventure, they went with the dance competition of one of the sisters named Chelsea. Apart from the three sisters, their puppies came to the limelight, and later on, got separated from them in Dancing Horse Festival.

 

Now it is their task to find their puppies before the arrival of the dance competition.

 

 

23. Barbie: Chelsea & The Lost Birthday (2021)

 

 

Following again the life of three sisters, it in particular deals with the birthday of the younger one Chelsea. Going abroad on a cruise, Chelsea was indeed excited about her birthday, however, it all went into the water when her birthday got skipped due to some magical occurrence.

 

Thus, Chelsea decided to bring it back with a hidden gem present in the Jungle. Starting again a new adventure, she went with finding that gem and kept her nerve on the peak because of the inhabitant animals present in the jungle.

 

On the other hand, her sisters that is Skipper and Stacie also learn about the possibilities of the jungle. While thinking of everything turning worse, eventually, all three sisters got reunited.

 

 

24. Barbie Presents: Thumbelina (2009)

 

 

Also known as Barbie: Thumbelina, the story adapts the scenes and views of Hans Christian Andersen’s Thumbelina. Unlike any normal Barbie or rest films, here Barbie appears as Thumbelina. She and her friends always worked in favour of the environment by protecting them.

 

A group called Twillerbees was also shown forming their existence as one with nature by their abilities to make plants and flowers flourish. However, things changed with the arrival of a new character named Makena who damaged the favorite area of Barbie and her friends.

 

At the same time, a construction company also comes into the story by threatening the land. Now the only way to stop everything is to find courage in this dark situation.

 

 

25. Barbie: Video Game Hero (2017)

 

 

It is the last film of the Barbie film series that was released in video formats or got telecasted on Nickelodeon. Carrying a typical subject of any 21st-century animation related to video games, Barbie: Video Game Hero also deals with magic.

 

Here Barbie shares definitely a magical ability but it is changed by transportation into her favorite video game. There she becomes a roller skating character and gains the friendship of other characters in the game, named Bella and Kris.

 

Three of them all came together and decided to play different levels present in the video game by defeating an evil emoji who has control of the whole game universe.

 

 

26. Barbie: Dolphin Magic (2017)

 

 

Having a blend of aquatic life and land life, the story started with a dolphin and mermaid swimming in the ocean. One of the dolphins got separated from the herd and got caught in a net.

 

On the other hand, it also deals with Barbie and her sisters with Ken. When they got to know about the real intention of a biologist Marlo as he plans to get all dolphins and mermaids by his hand, they soon settle down to save the aquatic life.

 

Barbie went quite far to save mermaids and dolphins where she identified herself as Isla, a mermaid so that Marlo could target her, not the real one. However, the story gains a happy ending when Barbie and Isla reunite.

 

 

27. Barbie in the Pink Shoes (2013)

 

 

It is the fourth film of dance in the Barbie film series, and the final too. Here Barbie is presented as a dancer, a ballet dancer, named Kristyn Farraday. One day, Kristyn with her friend Hayley somehow got transported into a secret ballet world.

 

There she finds a pink shoe, thus the story gains its title, which will help her later to defeat evil. In this new world, she met an evil named Snow Queen whom Kristyn should defeat with the help of her pink shoes and her favorite dance form ballet.

 

Despite having a repetitive dance plot, the film stood out for the same as it carries a new story and new character with a new adaptation.

 

 

28. Barbie in A Mermaid Tale (2010)

 

 

The last of Mattel Entertainment’s Barbie films, Barbie In A Mermaid Tale, is the 17th entry in the whole film series. Here we have Merliah Summers as Barbie who lives an ordinary life with her grandfather in California.

 

Without knowing her real identity, Merliah participated in a surfing tournament which later on, made her meet with reality. She is actually a mermaid princess of the Oceana kingdom. When she got to know about her existence and her Kingdom being in danger, she with her dolphin friends started their journey to save not just the kingdom but also her mother Calissa.

 

To save and bring back everything into perfect order, they need to find three magical Ocean items.

 

 

29. Barbie in A Mermaid Tale 2 (2012)

 

 

Carrying the same journey as Merliah and her mermaid and dolphin friends, the story is the sequel to the previously released Mermaid Tale. When Merliah was away from Oceana to participate in a huge surfing competition in Australia, an evil called Eris returned.

 

Eris returns to take the throne of the Oceana kingdom; however, Merliah and her friends will try to limit her with the help of love. It is not just about defeating evil but also testing herself between the two worlds.

 

In between all this chaos and darkness, Merliah discovers her real magic power while surfing through the water. Even though she lost her surfing competition, she shares the trophy with the winner, Kylie.

 

 

30. Barbie: Princess Charm School (2011)

 

 

Almost having a similar kind of theme to Barbie in The 12 Dancing Princess, this film also shares Barbie learning princess delicacies and etiquette. However, Zeke Norton’s directorial debut has its uniqueness in carrying a secret with the throne.

 

It started with a poor girl named Blair Willows living in the Kingdom of Gardenia. After winning the annual lottery, she attended a prestigious school where girls were trained to become Royal Ladies or Princesses of a missing throne.

 

As Blair started her journey towards being the proper princess, she soon discovered the mystery lying behind the kingdom’s missing princess.

 

 

31. Barbie: The Princess & the Popstar (2012)

 

 

Based on The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain, the film became the 23rd entry in the Barbie film series. It is directed by Zeke Norton and well-written by Steve Granat and Cydne Clark.

 

Barbie has a dual role under the character Princess Victoria or Tori (from the Kingdom of Meribella) and Keira. When these meet with each other then many commonalities come front.

 

It includes their interest in life as well as their beautiful looks. To discover whether each other’s life is easy or not, they decided to swap places. Thus, they found more value in their version rather than each other.

 

 

32. Barbie in Rock’n Royals (2015)

 

 

Just like its predecessor film, Barbie in Rock N’ Royals is also based on The Prince And The Pauper by Mark Twain. Like the previous two, it also deals with Barbie in a dual role.

 

The first one is a famous Rockstar named Erika while the other one is a princess named Courtney. Set in a modern musical background, these two characters somehow accidentally swapped their camps.

 

The rockstar Erika landed up in Camp Royalty meanwhile, Princess Courtney landed in Camp Pop. While they were trying to manage things according to their wishes and repair the mistake, they also formed a great friendship with each other.

 

 

33. Barbie: The Pearl Princess (2014)

 

 

Despite having the mermaid Barbie, the film shares a different story, plot, and vibe than the previous two. It started with a mermaid Barbie named Lumina who has a different ability to generate pearls with the help of dancing.

 

On the other hand, it also deals with the kingdom of King Nereus and Queen Lorelei whose throne is in danger because of their missing daughter. When their cousin Caligo was trying to put his son on the throne, somehow Lumina ended in it.

 

Her adventure started from a simple process of making a new friend her realm. However, that quickly turned into an outcome she couldn’t have imagined at all.

 

 

34. Barbie and the Secret Door (2014)

 

 

Mattel Playground Productions’ first-ever Barbie film, Barbie and the Secret Door goes with a young Barbie princess named Alexa. The story gains its track when Alexa finds a secret door while getting lost in the Royal Garden and its work.

 

Coming up a bit with musical qualities, the story further goes with the realm behind the book, which is the Zinnia Kingdom. There she met a fairy of orange named Nori and a mermaid named Romy.

 

These three accompanied by other creatures present in the series make it so that the evil called Malucia is taken care of in the story. The makers decided to use a fantastical and secretive approach towards this story instead of going for a classical or modern theme.

 

 

35. Barbie in Princess Power (2015)

 

 

Following the story of Princess Kara and her way to save the kingdom, the film was released on March 4, 2015. It is a 74-minute movie that is directed by Zeke Norton and well-written by Marsha Griffin.

 

When Kara was kissed by a magical butterfly, she immediately formed some superpower inside her, later using it to save people from danger. On the other hand, her cousin Princess Corinne wants to compete with Kara, and that’s the reason why she was also kissed by the same butterfly.

 

Rather than getting into the realm of positive superpowers, they ended up in the realm of dark superpowers. In order to make sure that the kingdom is safe, they will keep all their competition and jealousy aside as they work together to safeguard their precious land.

 

 

36. Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus (2005)

 

 

Like most of the Barbie movies where dance and music became the pillar, here it follows the same. It came with a Barbie skater Princess Annika and her Pegasus named Brietta, also Annika’s sister.

 

When the Kingdom of Annika was attacked by an evil called Wenlock, Annika with her sister or Pegasus Brietta started their journey to uncover many family secrets and find the ultimate plan to defeat the evil.

 

Their journey started with many opportunities that deal with some intervals which show a romantic side of Annika. When the sisters we finally able to defeat the evil, Brietta got transformed into her normal human avatar whereas, Annika started her life with a Prince.

 

 

37. Barbie: Star Light Adventure (2016)

 

 

It is the fifth film for theatrical release; however, it marks the 33rd in the Barbie film series. Unlike any classical approach, it took a step further and went with the setting of space and stars.

 

Here Barbie goes on many space adventures on her hoverboard with Pupcorn, a space kitten. When a bright star suddenly gets blurred or loses its twinkling, Barbie decides to visit a new planet where she can get the support of a team of heroes.

 

They all started their mission to save the star and follow their own hearts. In the end, it gave hope that if Barbie would go with her instincts, she might become the leader of the whole universe.

 

 

38. Barbie: Princess Adventure (2020)

 

 

Coming with musical adventure and comedy, the story was well written by Ann Austen and came under the direction of Conrad Helten. It was released on 1 September 2020 with a running time of 72 minutes.

 

When Barbie visited Princess Amelia, she realized how princesses are trapped in their royal life, therefore she wanted to switch her life with Barbie. It is only possible because of their look that remains identical most of the time.

 

Barbie enjoys one week of royalty while on the other hand, Amelia enjoyed her freedom. However, its worst came with the arrival of Prince Johan who tries to uncover all the secrets and forces Amelia to marry him.

 

But at the same time, Barbie threw his plot in the water, followed by Amelia’s coronation.

 

 

39. Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams (2021)

 

 

Again with the musical theme, it shares the 8th position in Barbie’s musical film. Dealing with a Barbie living in her California life, she sets off for New York City to join an art programe.

 

There, she met another Barbie coming from Brooklyn who was also on the same mission. After becoming great friends and enjoying an amazing time together, they explored the places around them and ended up participating in one competition.

 

This competition is related to singing a solo in Times Square, which would later be led by a strict father manager who would do anything to put his daughter in the same position.

 

In the end, it comes with a moral story where competition is nothing but dealing with one’s own best and sharing the same spotlight.

 

 

40. Barbie: Mermaid Power (2022)

 

 

Not just only three sisters but the past few Barbie characters reunite for this film. It goes with Barbie Malibu Roberts, Barbie Brooklyn, three sisters (Chelsea, Skipper, and Stacie), and mermaid Isla.

 

It became one of the last in watch order because of the amalgamation of characters and some events. While all these characters decided to change themselves to protect or help the Mermaid named Isla, they also deal with competition.
