Harem or HRM is a popular anime/manga sub-genre. Of course, you’ve googled this word before (Do not pretend as you’ve never been intrigued by that word!). Derived from the Arabic word, ‘hareem’/’harem’, HRM stories are based on polyamorous/polyandrous relationships.

 

These relationships can be either the main/core character surrounded by many women or men (Reverse Harem) vying for attention or more. The most important example is a key male character surrounded by a group of women.

 

There are some recent variants of this sub-genre where same-sex characters are involved in romantic/sexual relationships. However, its origins are highly debatable. Some fans regard Tenchi Muyo! setting the standard for harem anime.

 

But, some claim that Urusei Yatsura solidified the theme. If one were to focus on the structure of an HRM story, one might find that the crux of the plot may not be romantic.

 

But it may be ambiguous or dwindling. A relationship between two girls and one guy does not qualify as an HRM plot. It is rather known as, a love triangle.

 

Being a very sexualized genre, many have taken a disliking or even offence to the way girls/women have been represented in these anime. Some claim it to be needlessly sexual, a.k.a fan service.

 

The United States of America has been the toughest critic of this genre voicing the misinterpretation of being polyamorous and the sexist remarks these shows voice. Ironically, the US is also the one place where HRM anime/manga is becoming increasingly popular.

Nisekoi or ‘False Love’ is one of the most popular romantic comedy anime series in recent times. Raku is the son of a Yakuza gangster while Chitoge is the daughter of a rival gangster.

 

Raku has a unique locket around his neck. It was given to him by his childhood crush with whom he made a promise pact. Now as a teen, he cannot seem to recollect who this girl was.

A light novel lover, Tomoya Aki wants to create a visual novel computer game. During his spring vacation, he meets a beautiful girl who turns out to be his unnoticed classmate, Megumi.

 

Now head over heels for her, he decides to gather a group of girls who will help him create the game. Keeping Megumi as the lead character. Ultimately ending up in a romantic comedy soup.

 

The reviews are a mixed bag, some enjoyed the nonsensical comedy while some just couldn’t pull through all the hijinkery going on.

 

 

16. Martian Successor Nadesico

 

 

 

This one is an ‘anime-caption. Akito Tenkawa was a resident of Mars’ Utopia colony. However, the colony gets attacked by alien invaders known as Jovian Lizards. Akito manages to escape from the invasion and lands on Earth.

 

He has no memory of how he got there, but he knows one thing. He just wants to be a chef! Akito hates fighting and gets called to pilot the Nergal-designed space battleship called, ND-001 Nadesico.

 

Onboard the ship, Akito becomes the centre of attraction for all the ladies including the vessel’s captain. But all Akito wants to do is cook and watch his favourite anime, Gekiganger III.

Messing with nature? You’re going to get slapped in the face for that! Jin ends up carving a statue from a sacred tree trunk. Much to his surprise as he begins to take it back home, it begins to absorb the atmosphere around it and turns into a girl!

 

A beautiful girl ends up unleashing his wrath on him for carving up the tree and she begins to thrash Jin. A few hours of brainless comedy and storytelling does the mind good sometimes.

 

 

23. We Never Learn!

 

 

 

To complete his education, Nariyuki must tutor the geniuses of the school in their weakest subjects. Three girls, all excel in some subjects while are terrible in others. Nariyuki must teach them and also try to manage their advances toward him to get a scholarship.

 

Imagine having to teach while you’re learning the topics yourself! The fanservice and the comedy make this series fun to watch. When life gives you lemons you make the custard.

 

That’s essentially the gist of the series.

Shinichi Kanou is your run-of-the-mill otaku. An introvert but is knowledgeable about everything anime and manga. One day he awakens in a fantasy world, the Eldant Empire. No sooner than he learns he has been assigned a task by the Japanese government. He has to spread otaku culture in this land and is promised great support from them as well.

NEVER! Make a cat angry! NEVER! Junpei has an allergy to cats and tries to keep away from everything including cat lovers. Sadly, his crush is a cat lover too.

 

One day, he accidentally breaks the head of a cat deity and is cursed. He can now understand a cat’s speech. Junpei must complete 100 tasks to please the cats enough to lift the spell.

 

But will his allergy come in the way? This Fall 2009 release is enjoyable and funny.

Ah, a story completely set in a fictional medieval world, where the main character doesn’t get transported to! Lord Marksman and Vanadis explore the story of the Vanadis or War Maidens as they are known.

 

A powerful war maiden by the name of Elen invades the rival country of Brune. A strong archer known as Tigre gets his entire army decimated at her hands. however, she lets Tigre go on one condition, ‘to become hers’!

 

As much as this doesn’t even come close to sounding like an HRM title, it has a lot of ecchi and fanservice going on.

Arata Kasuga saves his town from an unknown danger by using a magical grimoire given by his cousin and his best friend. We follow Arata on his quest to uncover these strange occurrences in his town and get himself enrolled in Royal Biblia Academy.

 

Along with six female magicians, he sets out to learn about the grimoire given to him and also possibly help find his best friend whom he lost in the process.

 

It has tons of fanservice and tons of action. It doesn’t fall in your usual HRM category but the series is exciting and doesn’t fail to impress.

 

 

35. When Supernatural Battle Became a Commonplace

 

 

 

At this point in the list, you may have understood that the whole purpose of harem anime is to eliminate any sort of common sense and focus purely on the entertainment factor.

Monsters are real. And they want to date us! Monster Musume no Iru Nichijo or Everyday Life with Monster Girls. Based on the manga of the same name, the story revolves around Kimihito Kurusu.

 

His life turns upside down when he becomes a test subject to marry a liminal (alien species) who is a part of the Interspecies Cultural Exchange program. As of 2013, 2.3 million print copies been have sold in Japan.

 

The story is better than it seems to be and just like any good harem anime, it is just the right amount of perverted.

 

 

40. Oreshura

Japanese folks love their puns! To Love Ru is a pun on the English word ‘trouble’ or ‘toraburu’ and the Japanese word ‘Rabu’ meaning ‘love’. In this tale of unrequited, Yuuki Rito has a massive crush on his schoolmate Haruna.

 

But he cannot confess his love to her. One day, after another failed attempt at impressing Haruna, he comes home to find a naked girl in the bathtub, Lala. Lala is from the planet of Deviluke.

 

To avoid getting married to someone from her planet, she forcibly chooses Yuuki to become her husband to remain on Earth. This title hasn’t remained far away from controversy but has received some critical reviews as well.

 

The manga and series don’t shy away from being heavily sexualized and display the female body quite intricately.

 

 

42. Campione!

 

 

 

Dove Sono le signore?! When the protagonist of Campione! Kusanagi Goudou must travel to Sardinia to return an ancient tablet. He encounters a vicious sword mistress, Erica. There he encounters the god of war, Verethragna, who he ends up defeating.

 

Thus, making him the Campione or a god slayer. Now becoming one, he attracts almost every woman in Sardinia getting him into difficult situations. But Goudou is enjoying it and makes out with almost every girl he brings along to fight a god.

 

Yeah, that took a sharp turn. Overall, the show is the right amount of perverted and has action that keeps you hooked.

 

 

43. Mahou Sensei Negima!

 

 

 

If you know the pain of learning that the teacher you’re crushing on is getting replaced, then this is the perfect title for you! Negi Springfield is a 10-year-old wizard in training.

 

He has just one task left to complete to become the Master Wizard. He gets the odd task of becoming a maths teacher and ends up receiving hate from a student.

 

Asuna harbours deep feelings for her teacher and is enraged to see Negi there. Negi and Asuna must now learn to give in to their differences and get along. The story originates from a manga and has 13 OVAs, 26 episodic anime series, a film, and also a live-action television series!

Purely because this doesn’t only have fan service, but it has just the right amount of sleaze to heat things.

A story set in futuristic Japan, where an unforeseen disaster has turned the world upside down. A new species of humans have taken birth known as the Genestella. The Genestella are born with immense strength and brute force.

 

The elites are then trained at academies to heighten their powers. Ayato Amagiri, the protagonist of the series accidentally sees the popular witch Julius half-naked. She then challenges him to a Festas, a battle of the elite in their world.

 

Ayato being gifted with a powerful sword becomes the target of vengeance for many of Julius’s followers. But, Ayato hides a deep secret from his presence at the academy. It may sound like a Shonen anime but if you do watch the show, you will know it’s not.

 

Copious amounts of fan service will be shoved right in your face and some comedy added into the mix. Yes, its plot is done to death. Yes, it’s fun to watch.

46. Rosario + Vampire

 

 

 

Based on the manga series of the same name, we follow Tsukune Aono, a young teenager who couldn’t even get himself admitted to a high school. His parents find him a school with no prerequisites and he gets accepted.

 

While there, Tsukune can sense something odd with the school and learns that it is in fact as the name suggests, a Youkai Academy. There he bumps into Moka an attractive girl, whom he falls for.

 

Tsukune learns that she is a vampire and that the school’s rules state that if they were to find a human on campus, it must be executed immediately. Now stuck in a conundrum, Tsukune must conceal his identity to further his relationship with Moka.

 

Rosario + Vampire has a good amount of fan service, action, and comedy to make it a riveting story.

 

 

47. Masamune kun No Revenge

 

 

 

As a child, Masamune was often ridiculed for being overweight. After he gets rejected by his crush, Aki Adagaki, who calls him ‘Piggy’. He begins to work on himself to look better.

 

As a teen now, he looks handsome but becomes a narcissist. Now that he’s all done up, he’s been getting some serious female attention. But Masamune has other plans. He is out to get revenge on Aki.

 

As he transfers to her school, he sets his plan to move. But, when he receives an anonymous letter addressed to him by his nickname, Masamune must now discover the letter’s author.

 

Masamune-Kun no Revenge is a great romance-comedy with a fun plot!

 

 

48. Arifureta: From Commonplace to The World’s Strongest

 

 

 

Arifureta was one of the best-selling light novels in 2017 in Japan. However, the anime was subject to harsh criticism. It did surprisingly well amongst its fans. Here we follow the story of a naïve 17-year-old Hajime Nagumo, who is in a relationship with an idol, Kaori.

 

When Hajime, Kaori, and his classmates get summoned to a fantastical world where they must save mankind, things take a turn for the worse for Hajime. He is only able to transmute objects and isn’t able to play on the offence.

 

During a dungeon battle, he is betrayed by a classmate and plummets to the bottom of the abyss. There he encounters, a vampire, Yue, a perverted dragon, Tio, and a cute girl, Shea.

 

Hajime builds the courage to become stronger and leave the dungeon to find his way back home. Becoming the world’s strongest from the commonplaces. The animation isn’t all that great, some hate the way Hajime and Yue are.

 

But those who have watched the series thoroughly enjoyed it. The fans of this series brag about it and won’t shut up about the storyline and how unique the characters are.

 

 

49. Death March to The Parallel World Rhapsody

 

 

 

Being a video game beta tester has its perks. But being transported to the video games you play, doesn’t sound so fun now, does it? Ichirou Suzuki, a 30-year-old programmer gets transported to a dream world, quite literally after dozing off after a hard day’s work.

 

Finding himself in this RPG world, he realizes that he has now become his younger self and his name changed to Satou. The moniker he uses for beta testing. After upping his stats to 310 by casting a powerful spell on the evil forces in the game.

 

Satou becomes a coveted player in the game receiving its benefits and also some slave girl attention on the side. It does sound a bit like Sword Art Online, but Death March does stand apart in terms of an MMORPG anime.

 

Despite falling in the HRM category, it does carve out a niche for itself amongst its contemporaries.

 

 

50. In Another World with My Smartphone

 

 

 

Released in the Summer of 2017, Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni is an adventure comedy harem story. When God misfires a stray bolt of lightning at Touya Mochizuki, as an apology, he offers him one wish.

 

A chance to live again in a fantasy world, which Touya gladly accepts. But at one condition! Touya would like to bring his smartphone along with him. Embarking on a brand-new lease of life, Touya finds himself surrounded by magical beings and cute girls wanting his attention.

 

A coterie of girls gives Touya endless romantic options and frustrations as he begins to learn the ways of this new world. As fans put it, despite the bad character designs, animation, and done-to-death cliches.

 

The anime is surprisingly a good one. It’s like one of those things that you want to dislike but can’t because your brain and heart just agree to disagree.
