Recovering alcoholic and aspiring writer Jack Torrance is suffering from writer's block when he accepts an off-season caretaking post at the secluded Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Upon arrival, the manager shows him around and tells him what's what.

Jack's son Danny and wife Wendy go with him to the snow-clad destination. The little boy soon receives an enlightening lesson from the hotel's chef, Mr Hallorann, about a mystical psychic gift called 'The Shining'.

The hotel holds plenty of dark secrets, especially Room 237. Before long, something about the place seems to start driving Jack mad. Strange visions and bizarre occurrences compel him to perform a human sacrifice.
