After her aunt Alice Alquist is murdered at her London home, Paula marries her accompanist Gregory Anton and moves into her late aunt's long-vacant townhouse. Once they move in, Paula struggles with her aunt's memories and comes across a letter from a man named Sergis Bauer, to which her husband reacts violently.

 

As time goes by, Gregory forcefully tries to convince Paula of her insanity and decides to get her institutionalised. Meanwhile, Inspector Brian Cameron decides to reopen Alice's case after realising a gift of royal jewels wasn't recovered after Alice's death and also on notice Paula's anxious behaviour and Gregory's nonchalant attitude.
